About us

FareShare Greater Manchester is a leading member of the UK’s largest food charity, FareShare. We are one of a network of 21 similar centres located across the country. We are a community of independent franchise charities, all fighting the same issues: hunger and food waste. Across the UK, in fact, 250,000 tonnes of perfectly edible food is going to waste each year but FareShare want to see that food put to good use.

EMERGE 3Rs set up FareShare Greater Manchester in 2008. Our aim is to help tackle the food poverty issue in Greater Manchester by redistributing unwanted food across the region.

1We take quality, in-date surplus food…

The vast majority of food waste occurs in the supply chain, before it even reaches the supermarket. Working with the FareShare Network, we save quality surplus food from manufacturers and food retailers at both a regional and national level; over 2,704 tonnes in 2020!

2Receive it at our Greater Manchester warehouse…

We receive deliveries each day at our Greater Manchester warehouse which our team of over 189 volunteers sort and store. We in turn provide support to our volunteers; our way of saying a big thank you.

3And distribute it to charity members in our community…

Our volunteers then redistribute to over 230 charities, schools and community groups across Greater Manchester. Members can sign up to weekly orders of food from our warehouse to cover their main food needs, and can compliment this with extra surplus collections from their local supermarket.

4Who transform the food into nutritious meals for those in need

In 2020 we redistributed enough food for 6,392,434 meals. The organisations we support provide vital services alongside food services. They range from homeless shelters to food clubs and pantries, and from disability charities to school breakfast clubs, across just about every sector.

FareShare is the only charity to take food from the wholesale level of the food industry

The vast majority of surplus occurs before food even gets to the supermarket. Each FareShare regional centre takes that food and redistributes to those in need. FareShare Go is our supermarket collection service, which deals with supermarket-level surplus.
